Type 409L Stainless Steel (UNS S409L00) is a stabilized ferritic stainless steel that provides improved oxidation and corrosion resistance compared to carbon steel. Ease of fabrication combined with its corrosion resistance and economy have significantly broadened its utilization in automotive exhaust and other non-automotive applications. ASTM A240 defines three (3) sub categories of Type 409L stainless steel; UNS S409L10, UNS S409L20 and UNS S409L30. Each of these designations has a slightly different Ti or Nb stabilization requirement. Each of these compositions can be supplied as UNS S409L00 unless the purchaser specifically identifies a specific composition. It is produced with enhanced formability characteristics known as “High Performance” or “Ultra Form” in the industry.
ASTM A240
Typical Applications: Automotive exhaust systems applications such as manifolds exhaust pipes, catalytic converters, mufflers, tail pipes and other components. Non-automotive exhaust applications such as home heating systems, automotive thermostats and fuel filters, electrical transformer cases, caskets and heat exchanger tubing.
Grade 409L (UNS S409L00, EN 1.4512) is a kind of stabile version of 409L, composed with proper chromium, low composition of carbon and nitrogen and adjunction of titanium, all composition appropriate make Grade 409L products have some properties, corrosion resistance, weldability and formability. Due to the lower chromium, Grade 409L was another low cost option for corrosion resistant stainless steel.
Grade 409L has a good combination of heat resistance and corrosion resistance, can be ideal for non- or lightly corrosive environments or applications. It has excellent oxidation resistance in high temperatures and good welding performance, which can be used for automotive exhaust pipes or oil equipment.

Grade 409L Tubes offered by Metal Scope (INDIA) has good resistance to oxidation and may be used in continuous service up to 1140 Degree C provided reducing sulphur gases are not present. With its high chromium content, it offers good corrosion resistance to increase high temperature properties. The high chromium and nickel contents of Type 409L Tubes provide comparable corrosion resistance, superior resistance to oxidation and the retention of a larger fraction of room temperature strength than the common austenitic alloys like Type 304.

FORMING:
409L stainless can be cut, blanked stretch formed and drawn without difficulty. The formability characteristics of Type 409L are very similar to carbon steel.
WELDING:
Type 409L is readily welded using the conventional welding procedures common to carbon steel. These include high frequency, resistance, gas tungsten arc (GTAW or TIG), gas metal arc (GMAW or MIG), electron beam and laser techniques. Although autogenously welds are common, particularly in manufacture of tubing, a filler metal, Type 409LCb, is often employed.
CORROSION:
The corrosion resistance of 409L stainless is about the same as Type 410 stainless steel. Type 409L offers improved corrosion resistance in comparison to carbon steels. However, its corrosion resistance is lower in comparison to other stainless steels with higher chromium content. Type 409L offers sufficient resistance to corrosion and oxidation to be used in many automotive and non-automotive applications.
General Characteristics: Grade 409L is titanium stabilized ferritic stainless steel containing about 11% chromium conforming to UNS S40910. The presence of chromium leads to the formation of a passive surface film which provides corrosion resistance. The addition of titanium prevents formation of harmful chromium carbides which can lead to inter granular corrosion in service. Titanium being a ferrite former also helps in avoiding hardening on cooling after welding. Furthermore, titanium also ties up with sulphur, leading to improved resistance to pitting corrosion. Atmospheric corrosion resistance of this grade is nearly 250 times that of mild steel. This grade is well suited for such mildly corrosive environments where good formability and weldability are required. 409L stainless steel is especially suitable for the manufacture of automotive exhaustive systems on account of: · Good cold workability similar to that of low alloy steels. · Good corrosion resistance in natural atmospheres and in contact with moderately corrosive media. · Good oxidation resistance up to 800 0C. · Good weld ability .
